We are all guilty of becoming extremely lazy regarding are shopping. Going off to the supermarkets, trudging up and down the aisles with endless signs of 3 for 2,encouraging you to buy more stuff than you actually need and then end up chucking half of it away. Where’s the fun in that? Of course I’m not saying that you don’t need the supermarket for normal everyday things like loo paper or milk, but you need not by everything from them. So I’m starting a campaign to support your local shop, from fishmonger to greengrocer, butcher or baker I want to bring the joy back into shopping. It is a misconception that the supermarket is always cheaper and it certainly does not have the variety that your local fishmonger or butcher has.
So over the next few weeks I thought I would feature a few of my favourite local shops in London. Check them out and see what you think and let me know which are your favourite shops too, so we can spread the word…
The Chelsea fishmonger on Cale street in Chelsea has got to be my top rated fishmonger. Rex the owner used to have a little fish shop in Surrey, then a few years ago he opened up The Chelsea Fishmonger and now he has another shop in Burpham in Surrey (which is equally good). He has also recently opened a fish restaurant in Soho. ‘Rex and Mariano’ which must serve some of the freshest fish in town.
And its not just the wet fish on offer their selection of shellfish is amazing.
So get to know your local fishmonger, find out whats in season, try buying new fish varieties, don’t worry if you are unsure how to prepare it you’re fishmonger will always be happy to give you some tips on how to cook it and if you feel brave enough you might end up cooking something like this!
Support you're local fishmonger
